INFORMATION ABOUT THE MARBEFES TOOLBOX
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
1. What is the MARBEFES Toolbox?
The MARBEFES Toolbox is a collection of science-based tools designed to help understand, assess, and value marine biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and services. It supports informed decision-making for a wide range of stakeholders.
2. Who can use the toolbox?
While the tools are mainly developed by scientists, many are designed to be accessible or interpretable by policymakers, educators, consultants, NGOs, and other stakeholders. Some tools may require technical or scientific knowledge, but results are often presented in an applied and understandable format.
3. How do I navigate the toolbox?
You can explore the tools using the filtering system by:
- Type of tool (ecological, economic, cultural…)
- User profile (governance, education, industry, civil society)
- Geographic focus or ecosystem type
- Management challenge (e.g. marine planning, ecological value, stakeholder perception…)
You can also ask MARBot, our virtual assistant, to help you find the most relevant tools for your needs.
4. What kind of outputs do the tools provide?
Each tool generates specific outputs, such as:
- Spatial maps of ecosystem values
- Network visualizations (e.g., food webs, risk pathways)
- Trait matrices or functional indices
- Survey data summaries
- Conceptual models for decision-making. These outputs can support planning, regulation, communication, and further analysis.
5. Are the tools ready to use?
Most tools have been tested across several case studies (BBTs). Some are already mature and operational, while others are prototypes or still evolving. The toolbox includes notes on usability, time and cost requirements, and any needed expertise.
6. Can I apply the tools to my region or project?
Yes. Many tools are designed to be adaptable to different marine regions and contexts. The toolbox includes information on required inputs (e.g. data availability) and potential limitations, so you can assess feasibility.
7. Do I need to install software or have coding skills?
No. Most tools are documented through guides, templates or forms. Some may involve data analysis software, but alternatives or simplified versions are offered when possible. For complex tools, collaboration with researchers is recommended.
8. What can I expect to gain from using the toolbox?
You can expect to:
- Identify the most suitable tools for your marine challenge
- Access clear guidance and examples of use
- Understand the expected outcomes and data needs
- Apply the tools’ results to support decision-making, planning or communication
- Contribute to sustainable marine governance based on biodiversity evidence
9. How can I give feedback or request support?
You can contact the MARBEFES team or leave feedback through the platform. We welcome contributions, questions, and case suggestions to improve the toolbox and its real-world applicability.
About the Marbefes Project
MARBEFES (MARine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning leading to Ecosystem Services)
is a European research project funded by Horizon Europe and UKRI, aiming to improve our understanding
of the links between marine biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and the benefits these systems provide to society.
🎯 Our Goal
To evaluate and promote the value of marine biodiversity by developing and testing innovative tools that help:
- Assess ecosystem health and function
- Identify and quantify ecosystem services
- Support sustainable marine policies and decision-making
🌍 Where We Work
The project involves over 20 case study areas (called BBTs – Broad Biodiversity Types)
across Europe’s regional seas: Arctic, Atlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea.
These locations allow us to test tools across diverse ecosystems, pressures, and stakeholder needs.
🤝 Who We Work With
MARBEFES brings together a multidisciplinary consortium of ecologists, economists, social scientists,
and governance experts from over 20 institutions across Europe. We also collaborate closely with:
- Policy-makers
- NGOs
- Local communities
- Industry stakeholders
🧰 Why a Toolbox?
To ensure that scientific insights are translated into action, MARBEFES is building a Toolbox
that gathers tested, science-based methods for ecosystem valuation and planning.
This toolbox will support users in identifying fit-for-purpose tools, adapted to their region and challenge.
